1Is a day trip to Agra from Jaipur worth it?
If Jaipur is your base and you only have one spare day, yes. Agra is about 240 km away, roughly 4 hours each way on the Jaipur–Agra highway. It makes for a long day of around 14 hours, but you'll see the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort properly and sleep in the same hotel that night. If you have more time, staying one night in Agra lets you see the Taj at sunrise without a 4 am start.

2Timing the day
Leave Jaipur at 5 or 6 am. You'll reach Agra by 10, see the Taj Mahal until about 12:30, have lunch, then spend an hour and a half at Agra Fort. Leave Agra by 4 pm and you're back in Jaipur by 9 to 10 pm, with a stop on the way. The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday, so never plan this trip for a Friday. Carry your passport or ID, as it's checked at the ticket counter.

3The best stops on the way
Chand Baori in Abhaneri, about 90 minutes from Jaipur, is one of the deepest stepwells in India, with around 3,500 steps cut in perfect geometric flights over 13 storeys. It takes 30 minutes and is right off the highway. Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's red sandstone capital, sits 40 km before Agra and is worth an hour on the way back. You won't have time for both comfortably, so pick one.

4Inside the Taj Mahal: what to know
Buy tickets online to skip the queue, and pay the small extra fee if you want to enter the main tomb. Large bags, food, tripods and drones aren't allowed, so leave them in the car. Hire a licensed guide at the gate, or ask us to arrange one, as the stories of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal bring the place to life. Battery cars run from the parking area to the gate, as fuel vehicles can't go near the monument.

5Car, train or tour?
Trains between Jaipur and Agra take 4 to 5 hours but rarely leave early enough for a full day, and you still need a taxi at both ends. A private car picks you up at your hotel, waits at every stop and brings you back the same night. For families or groups of six to twelve, a tempo traveller is often cheaper per person. Our Jaipur Agra one day trip includes the car, tolls, parking and a guide in Agra.
