1Two ways to drive from Jaipur to Udaipur

There are two good roads from Jaipur to Udaipur, and both start the same way: south-west to Kishangarh, about 100 km out of Jaipur. The shorter route carries on through Ajmer, Beawar and Rajsamand, about 400 km in all, and passes Nathdwara an hour before Udaipur. The other turns south at Kishangarh for Bhilwara and Chittorgarh. It's about 30 km longer, but it goes right past Chittorgarh Fort, one of the great sights of Rajasthan. Either way, plan on 6 to 7 hours of driving, plus whatever time you spend at the stops. Both roads are wide, well-kept highways with tea stops and clean restaurants along the way.

2Ajmer and Kishangarh: the first stop

Ajmer is about two and a half hours from Jaipur and makes a natural first break. Ajmer Sharif Dargah, the shrine of the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, sits in the old city; cars stop a short walk away and you go the rest of the way on foot through the lanes. Allow an hour, and keep your head covered inside. Pushkar is only 15 km further, so if you have time you can add its lake and Brahma Temple, though that adds two hours or so to the day. On the way you pass Kishangarh, known for its marble market, where the white marble yards make an unusual photo stop.

3Chittorgarh Fort: worth the longer road

If you take the Bhilwara road, Chittorgarh Fort is the reason to. It covers a whole hilltop above the town and is one of the largest forts in India, part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside you'll find the Vijay Stambha (Tower of Victory), the older Kirti Stambha, Rana Kumbha's palace and Rani Padmini's palace beside its pool. Your driver can take the car up and stop at each one, so two to three hours is enough to see it properly. From the fort it's about two hours to Udaipur, so you still arrive in good time for the evening

4Nathdwara, Haldighati and the Statue of Belief

On the shorter road through Rajsamand, the last big stop is Nathdwara, about an hour before Udaipur. The Shrinath ji temple here is one of the most important Krishna temples in India. Darshan happens in set slots through the day, with the doors closed in between, so ask your driver to time your arrival or check the timings on the day. Just outside town is the Statue of Belief, a 369-foot statue of Lord Shiva you can see from the highway. A short detour takes you to Haldighati, where Maharana Pratap fought the Mughal army in 1576, with a small museum about the battle

5Planning the day

Leave Jaipur by 7 or 8 in the morning. That gives you time for one or two stops and gets you into Udaipur before dark, which matters because we don't drive these highways at night. Pick the stops before you set off: Ajmer plus Nathdwara fits easily in one day, and so does Chittorgarh on its own, but trying to do all three makes for a very long day. October to March is the most comfortable time to travel. In summer, start at sunrise and keep the afternoon for the drive in an air-conditioned car. Carry water and some cash for temple offerings and parking at the smaller stops

That is an estimate: the fare depends on the car, the season and the stops you want, and we agree the final figure with you on WhatsApp before you book.
